Every truly epic road trip needs a playlist. Tunes to play loud and proud, windows wound down, imagination awake at just what you’ll find around the next bend.

Songs that soundtrack a journey that brings as much joy as the destination.

The Wales Way is a new family of three national routes that lead you into the heart of real Wales.  The Coastal Way travels the west coast around Cardigan Bay, a 180-mile (290km) road-trip between the sea and mountains. The Cambrian Way crosses the spine of Wales for 185 miles (300km) between Llandudno and Cardiff, through National Parks and big green spaces. The North Wales Way leads 75 miles (120km) past mighty castles into the island of Anglesey.

For Dydd Miwsig Cymru (that’s Welsh Language Music Day - Friday 9th February 2018), DJ Gareth Potter has thumbed through his racks to curate a special playlist of hits, highlights and rare beats from the past six decades, creating the perfect companion to your Wales Way adventure.

Our music as diverse as the landscape you’ll drive through as you listen. Here’s five of Gareth’s picks not to skip from the 30 song playlist. You can stream the #DyddMiwsigCymru Wales Way playlist on SpotifyiTunesDeezer and YouTube.

Gyrru, Gyrru, Gyrru - Gruff Rhys

Gruff’s career has taken him from 80s indie rebel to national treasure via Ffa Coffi Pawb, Super Furry Animals and his brilliant solo albums. Gyrru, Gyrru, Gyrru (Driving, Driving, Driving) comes from his show for children, Candylion and makes for a fine family singalong as your journey reveals itself.

Ar Y Ffordd - Edward H Dafis

The quintessential classic Welsh rock band, Edward H’s salute to life on the road is powered by big guitar riffs and a sentiment that celebrates the intention to travel. Probably the most popular band to emerge from our land in the 1970s, their anthems continue to inspire each new generation.  Ar Y Ffordd means On The Road in English, and you could be forgiven for thinking you’re a Welsh Kerouac as you travel down the tarmac to this tune.

Byth yn Stopio - Y Ffug

Y Ffug’s powerful neo punk rock never fails to move anyone who sees their blistering live shows. Turn this one up to 11. Byth yn Stopio (Never Stop in English) is fuelled by the youthful compulsion to keep moving and keep discovering new destinations.  Just like you.

Cymylau - Band Pres Llareggub

Who would’ve thought that the most inventive albums of 2018 would come from a brass band? Named after Dylan Thomas’ dreamlike village in Under Milk Wood, The Llarreggub Brass Band will challenge you to look beyond the obvious to the clouds and horizons and imagine what lies beyond the mountains and the treelines…

Sebona Fi - Yws Gwynedd

The most popular song from the current prince of Welsh language pop features driving guitars, uplifting harmonies and catchy hooks and melodies. This will power you on your journey when the road is open and the sky is clear.
